Has the Canadian Art Market Peaked?
Major Auction Houses Enjoy Record Season
The historically conservative Canadian art-buying public ends another atypical season of high-spending this week. With record prices being reached for Emily Carr and Lawren Harris paintings that are nevertheless very close to previous records, is it safe to say that the 8-year boom in art prices is over? Does the interest in and high prices for mid-Century and still-living abstract pioneers signal a decline in the popularity of 19th Century and Group of Seven-related paintings? Despite the claims of the auctioneers, is the insulated and (when compared with the U.S. and British) economically weaker Canadian market too small to sustain such high prices? With another round of art sales coming this Fall, we may see if a market correction is in the offing.
